Walter R. Smith

Walter R. Smith, of Pittsburgh, PA passed away on  August 17, 2023 at the age of 79. Walter, also known as Smitty, was a graduate of Edinboro University. He taught mathematics at Wilkinsburg High School in the 1970s. He went to night school to earn a master's degree in education, in addition to studying computer programming. Smitty worked as a system's analyst at Mellon Bank and then moved into data security. He retired from the bank in 2003 and moved to Forest County, fulfilling his lifelong dream of living in the country. Smitty enjoyed the outdoors, had a keen interest in history, loved to dance and was an avid storyteller. He fought advanced stage lung cancer with tremendous resiliency for two years prior to his passing due to complications from treatment. Smitty did things his own way and never gave up. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Diane Smith. He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Bob) Mankowski of Kilbuck Township, PA and Robert Smith of Los Alamos, NM. 

A virtual celebration of life will be scheduled for family and friends at a future date.
