Edward Charles Murphey
November 4, 1936 – February 19, 2026
Edward Charles Murphey, known to many as “Murph,” age 89, of Ben Avon, formerly of Spring Hill, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
Murph was the beloved husband of 48 years to Kathy Murphey; loving father of Maureen Grant (Joseph), Melissa Murphey, and Matthew Murphey (Paul); and cherished father-in-law to JoAnn Murphey. He was a proud and devoted “Poppy” to his grandchildren Kimberly Grant (Matthew Cahalan), Carolyn Grant, Victoria Grant; and Lee Michael Murphey (Kristen).
He was welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, Taylor and Anna Murphey, and his beloved son, Michael James Murphey.
A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Murph spent nearly 75 years riding — living large, loving deeply, and surrounding himself with countless dear friends along the way. He was a lifetime member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and a longtime member of the Universal Riders Club (URC), where he was honored as the oldest active member and affectionately recognized as “The King.”
Over the course of his life, Murph rode his Harley through every contiguous state (except Washington), as well as Alaska, including a memorable ride along Route 66. Riding was never just about miles for Murph, it was about the people beside him. Through decades of friendship and brotherhood, he became “Murph” to many and a second dad to more than a few.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. His ride here on earth may be over, but his road goes on.
A memorial ride will be held later this summer.
The family is deeply grateful to the nurses and caregivers at UPMC Shadyside Hospital (6th floor, Neuro/Surgical), whose kindness, compassion, and steady care brought comfort during his final days.
Family will welcome friends at McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, 529 California Ave., Avalon, PA, on Tuesday, February 24, from 6–8 p.m., and Wednesday, February 25, from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 26, at 10 a.m. at Regina Coeli Parish (Assumption Church), 45 N. Sprague Ave., Bellevue, PA.
In honor of Murph’s spirit and the road he loved, we share the following:
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, “Wow, What a Ride!”
